thanks very much for all of the input on hemochromatosis. my ferritin level was only 66, but we did not test beyond that, and i understand that in some cases, ferritin will be fairly normal, it will be the transferrin level that will be over 45 or 55%... maybe this is all a shot in the dark for me, but i am of irish background. so many of the symptoms seem to overlap, but the observation that not everyone with hemochromatosis develops ms is insightful.


one of the things i wonder about in my case is that i had hundreds of pinpoint lesions, not just a couple of larger lesions. i did not react well to the one and only mri that i had in 1992, and have not had subsequent pictures taken. after my mri in 1992, i found my walking coordination never recovered... my gait remained wonky afterward and never corrected. what do these magnetic fields do to all that iron in the brain?


LDN, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (100% oxygen) and phlebotomy (reduces iron in the brain) may be useful therapies


an abnormally high amount of iron in the frontal cortex of the brain is indicative of MS or some other white matter disease !

Myelin is the fatty sheath coating the axons, or nerve cells, that insulate and aid in efficient nerve fiber conduction. In diseases such as multiple sclerosis, the myelin sheath has been found to degrade.

LOW VITAMIN D PREDICTIVE OF MS IN CANADIAN CHILDREN



Children later diagnosed with multiple sclerosis had far lower levels of vitamin D than other youngsters, Canadian researchers reported on Friday in studies showing more links between the "sunshine" vitamin and disease.


These were the first studies to show the effects in children, although others have shown that adults who live in northern latitudes, who get less sun exposure, may have a higher risk of MS.


They also support a growing body of studies that link low vitamin D levels with disease, including breast and colon cancer, heart disease, diabetes and tuberculosis.


Multiple sclerosis is a nervous system disease caused by damage to the myelin sheath that protects nerve cells. It affects 2.5 million people globally and can cause symptoms ranging from vague tingling to blindness and paralysis.


Vitamin D, made when skin is exposed to sunlight and found in fatty fish like salmon, is added to milk and other foods in many countries. Evidence suggests it helps lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.


Several studies presented at a meeting on MS in Montreal showed that children had low levels of the vitamin when they began to show evidence of the disease.


"Three-quarters of our subjects were below the optimal levels for vitamin D," said Heather Hanwell, a graduate student in nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto, who led one study.


Hanwell's team studied 125 children who had what is known as a demyelinating event -- evidence of damage to myelin that causes symptoms such as numbness. Blood was taken at the time.


Twenty of the children were diagnosed with MS within the next year, Hanwell said. Tests of the blood showed that 68 percent of those children had vitamin D insufficiency.


On average, the children with MS had much lower levels of the vitamin than children who did not experience any other MS-like symptoms.


Another study led by Dr. Brenda Banwell of Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children showed similar results.


"Seventeen of 19 children who had been diagnosed with MS had vitamin D levels below the target level," Banwell said in a telephone interview.


The next step is to see if giving vitamin D supplements prevents MS or helps relieve symptoms, Banwell said. She said it was not clear how lacking vitamin D might be linked with MS.

N-ACETYLGLUCOSAMINE REPAIRS CELL SURFACE SUGAR DEFECTS



Defects on cell-surface sugars may promote the short-term inflammation and long-term neurodegeneration that occurs in the central nervous system of multiple sclerosis patients


In tests on mice, Dr. Michael Demetriou (university of california, irvine) found that genetic deficiencies in a process called protein glycosylation led to a spontaneous disease very similar to MS, including paralysis associated with inflammatory damage to the protective myelin coating on nerve cells and degeneration of axons and neurons. Protein glycosylation refers to the addition of specific sugars to proteins; virtually all cell- surface and secreted proteins have complex sugars attached to them.


MS is a two-stage disease, with initial attacks of inflammatory demyelination, which damages myelin, followed approximately 10 years later by a slow, progressive neurdegenerative phase marked by loss of axons and nerve cells.


The irreversible damage to the central nervous system induced by neurodegeneration in MS leads to long term disability, including paralysis, incoordination, dementia and pain, and is not targeted by currently available therapies.


Demetriou's findings provide the first genetic model of MS in which both inflammatory demyelination and neurodegeneration arise from defects in a single biological pathway.


In previous studies, Demetriou found that the dietary supplement N- acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), which is similar but more effective than the widely available glucosamine, corrected defects in protein glycosylation in cells and inhibited inflammatory demyelination in mice. The new study opens the possibility that metabolic therapy with GlcNAc may also prevent neurodegeneration.

i do know you need that solar noon sun on the skin over summer in childhood (which i had) to set the immune system properly so it doesn't go into auto immune mode


the research below says that the way the regulatory t cells work is pretty well set by fifteen and if they are predisposed to autoimmune evisceration of whatever then that is the way they will work over the remainder of your life (lots of implications for the gut immune system here)


as the homocysteine increases with age of course with increased inflamation the auto-immune damage will get worse


and any infectious stress like a background bacterial or viral infection will excite it


LDN (low dose naltrexone) may be helpful for ms as it seems to downregulate the immune system and it's the anti bacterial immune system that may do the damage in ms.

“We need some of the regulatory cells more than others,” says Dr. Ignatowicz. “We probably need more of the ones that recognize autoantigens on the pancreas and we need the ones that recognize tumors to be less frequent.”

I just finished doing the 16 week study of LDN - the adult study for Dr. JM. (Wanting to see for myself what this was and if it was okay for my six year old autistic son).


I did the blood testing in January and then in June and my results are - well - weird. I am in no way capable of interpreting it all - but I do understand some of it and am working on understanding the rest. I had no yeast issues - or none that I noticed. I did sleep tremendously better after about four weeks. I also became constipated - which is new for me. A slight decrease in appetite and overall pretty good mood.

It appears that my TGF status has improved as has my white blood count. But my natural killer cell activity took a nose dive - I have no idea why. I am more heavy metal toxic than I thought so I am taking ALA now - still with no yeast problem. I have no idea of what to do about the NK problem. I decided to go ahead and do the LDN for a year to see if my TGF can get to normal ranges.


I have a very good friend who has come down with MS and I am begging him to at least try LDN. I hope it helps all of you. Perhaps having a blood test like this every six months or so would be benefical in determining if changes are happening - slowly - but at least happening.


We did put my son on the TD - LDN and his sleep got much better too. He did not get constipated nor show any adverse reactions. He is much more receptive of peer interaction and communicating via sign much better. His yeast has always been bad - way before LDN. His yeast did not get any worse. basically people who take it are lowering autoimmunity and it may be your son is simply not showing symptoms of viral illnesses


its an odd thing but auto immunity can knock as much out of the brain as viruses


looking at the ldn_autism board, the parents who take it, seem to come of it after a while, its too plus and minus, i might hypothesize it gives brain growth factors but lowers viral immunity


its a real insight into the depth of auto immune issues that the vaccine holocast is inducing


tgf beta is a signalling growth factor inhibitor and thats interesting. the downside of low levels is a propensity to cancer but the upside is useful tissue regeneration, the sort of thing that comes with several generations of autistically traited forbearers

I am getting ready to do a hair test on both myself and my boy. He has one about every year - I have never had one.


That is interesting what you said about LDN knocking at the brain - I do feel like I am working at half speed some days. Very similar to how I felt when I first experienced yeast die-off - but not as bad. Mostly a delay in my thought process. I need to think about whatever it is a bit longer. I also noticed my reaction time to things is a bit off - including getting upset. My four children think that "mom is in a better mood these days!"


IF I get some exercise in - I am just fine - reaction time back up and all. So, I guess I need to keep my blood circulating well to keep the ole brain out of first gear. Oh yeah - I also have super low blood pressure - too low the nurse said. It was checked over several weeks and it was always waaaaay, way low. It always has been - even when I was pregnant with my twins. Until now, I thought it was a good thing.

I want to relay this interesting experience that we have had with LDN. When we first put my essentially recovered 4-year old on LDN, he had the usual side-effects like sleep issues, yeasty behavior, etc. He also developed a fever and was sick for several days. At the time, my husband developed a case of hives that seemed to appear only when he was around my son. I proposed the idea that my son was shedding virus and that my husband was having viral hives from being in proximity with the virus. I was told that my husband's hives were unrelated and just a fluke coincidence.


After several months on LDN, we decided to stop because of numerous rashes and some concerns that his allergies seemed to be getting worse on LDN. We stopped for about 6 weeks during which time, my son's behavior became extremely loopy and never returned to his normal, pre-LND state. After seeing that his study conclusion labs showed dramatic improvement, we decided to put him back on LDN. My son immediately developed a high fever, which lasted 3 days and Herpes-like sores in and around his mouth, as well as nasal and chest congestion/cough.


Last night (at the end of day 3 of my son's fever) my husband announces that, once again he has hives!!! Coincidence??? I don't think so. I'm 7 months pregnant and worried that my unborn fetus may be also exposed to whatever my son is shedding right now.


I replied recommending retinyl acetate and said that the benefit (?) of ldn seemd to be the encouragement of brain growth factors and not as an anti-viral, in fact it may be a t cell supressor

My dd is using LDN under the supervision of her DAN for ADD/SID/high lead. I decided to try it for my psoriasis and arthritis and got into Dr. McC's study (couldn't get my doctor's to prescribe).


I just finished week 5 on LDN for psoriasis and p arthritis. The joint pain is still there but not nearly as bad. A storm moved through KY today and normally I would ache all over with stabbing pain in my left hip. I only have a dull ache there.

My skin continues to gradually clear. It seems to be a slow process. The scaling is less and I'm less itchy. The most improvement is on my lower extremities (legs and arms) and seems to be working it's way up.

great! I also have skin issues, ecsthma and psorisis. I found that the combo of LDN (at night on the spot), mag cream and vit A (mixed together and put on topically as well) worked wonders. OH and the diet, getting gluten adn casien out of my diet did the biggest wonders with it. it was related to a food allergy. the aches are also better with LDN AND the diet
